Remove Unnecessary iMessage Apps. If you have too many iMessage apps, then deleting the ones that are not essential might help. Here is a step by step guide on how to delete the iMessage app. Disable and Re-enable iMessage. Open the Settings app on your iPhone. Go to the iMessage section through your phone’s Settings. After days of trial and error, I was able to solve this problem by doing two main things: 1. completely resetting imessage, and 2. resetting NVRAM.
Step 1: Resetting imessage: I logged out and completely exited the application. Then, I followed the instructions here and improvised further by clearing the entire folder ~/Library/Messages: WARNING: you will lose all your chat history/attachments/etc. Restart your computer and go straight to step 2.

I also did a hard reset on the iPhone.
Don't open messages until these steps are done.

iMessages are texts, photos, or videos that you send to another iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac over Wi-Fi or cellular-data networks. These messages are always encrypted and appear in blue text bubbles. To turn iMessage on or off, go to Settings > Messages.
SMS/MMS
If you aren’t using iMessage, you can use SMS/MMS. These messages are texts and photos that you send to other cell phones or another iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. SMS/MMS messages aren't encrypted and appear in green text bubbles on your device.
